    • 2011 University of Massachusetts study found that meditators have different brain structure- 16 subjects meditated for 30 minutes per day. An MRI revealed an increase in the area of the hippocampus, which deals with learning and memory. Conversely, there was a decrease in the area of the amygdala, which deals with fear, stress, and anxiety
    • University of Wisconsin study in 2011 tested meditating monks and non-meditating volunteers on response to pain and threat of pain. When participants were told that pain would be administered in 10 seconds, non-meditators reacted instantly, while meditators only reacted when the pain was actually administered through heat. This shows that non-meditators react to the projection of pain in the future while meditators can stay in the present moment longer.

Law of Attraction


Much has been written about the Law of Attraction and universal consciousness by such authors as Esther Hicks, Bruce Lipton, Deepak Chopra, and Gregg Braden.  The ideas espoused by these authors are very empowering and exciting.  Many people are on a quest to find out how to interact with the Universe in order to have a more fulfilling life.  More and more people are talking about this topic and getting excited about it.


The biblical edits of the fourth century A.D., according to many scholars, removed writings which empowered the individual and affirmed that change begins from within us. We have been taught to think that we have no personal power.


However, much new and exciting research has been undertaken which is showing that we are much more powerful than we have heretofore thought. As Gregg Braden has said, “If you can change your thinking, you can change your body and your DNA. If you can change your body, you can change your world.” This leads to the enormously exciting conclusion that our feelings and thoughts are mirrored in our outer world. He also has described experiments which have proved the existence of an intelligent field of energy which responds directly to our thoughts and feelings. His work, along with that of the Boundary Institute in New Jersey and the Global Coherence Project, indicate that the universe is one big consciousness computer where what one focuses on is reflected directly back to the individual, without exception. Quantum physics has uncovered some very convincing evidence to prove this.


Various meditation exercises can be used to re-wire one’s brain away from thoughts of limitation and negativity. Strong negative limiting beliefs, most of which were ingrained in childhood, influence how we think to a great degree. According to some authors, as much as 95 percent of our thoughts are determined by pre-existing beliefs. Therefore, only 5 percent of what we think is truly influenced by actual events we are encountering at the moment. It is absolutely essential to undertake some simple exercises which will create new neural pathways in the brain in order to allow the manifestation techniques to work.


One must reframe various situations in order to have them enter one’s reality.  This could include turning what could have been a contentious meeting into a very friendly and productive one; taking anxieties around travel and turning it into a situation where the trip was actually enjoyable; being able to freely express thoughts without feeling limited; and improving emotional and physical well-being. Future posts will include some sample techniques.

Benefits of Reiki


Reiki is a nontraditional bioenergetic system of stress relief and physical healing. During hands-on treatment, the practitioner places his or her hands in specific positions on or above the patient’s body and allows universal energy to assist in the patient’s healing. Patients usually experience relaxation and peacefulness and may feel warmth and other subtle and pleasant sensations. The treatment generally lasts from 15 to 60 minutes.


During the treatment the practitioner does not diagnose a patient and does not perform any purposeful manipulations of the patient’s energy field. The intention of the practitioner during the treatment is to be a pure conduit of healing energy. It is believed that during the treatment the patient’s body draws the necessary healing energy and distributes it according to its needs.


Reiki works to put the body back into balance. It works on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. It can calm the emotions, decrease and remove physical pain, and calm the anxious mind. It also helps to cleanse the body of toxins and speed up and strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself. It can make the experience of chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery more tolerable.


Scientific research published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal showed that Reiki was able to accomplish a significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure and heart rate. The Complete Study of Autonomic Nervous System Changes during Reiki Treatment: A Preliminary Study was published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, volume 10, number six.


Another Reiki study done at the Helfgott Research Institute at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, Portland, Oregon, showed that Reiki has a measurable effect on the immune system. This study examined the benefits of using Reiki to increase the white blood cell counts of volunteers. It showed that Reiki enhanced the immune system by increasing the number of white blood cells in those who received Reiki.


When Reiki treatments have been given to terminally ill cancer patients some general trends include: stabilization in which there is time to enjoy the last days of one’s life, and relief from pain, anxiety, and edema.


It is not recommended to use Reiki as a substitute for conventional therapy.

How to Get Your Local Hospital to Accept Alternative Therapies

If you are an alternative health care provider and think that you would like to bring Reiki or any other alternative therapy into a hospital setting, here are some points to remember:


Practice confidence-building

It is a mistake to think that you are not qualified to do this just because you are “only” an individual provider. Your credentials to practice and the strength of your convictions are enough. Talk to others in your field. They will probably be delighted to hear of your plans.


Do your homework

Gather some statistics on the use of your therapy in hospitals around the country. It would also help to research any studies which have been done showing the positive benefits of your therapy to patients.


Get the names of those top staff members at the hospital who may be the most sympathetic

It is helpful to talk to your friends who are traditional health care providers. They can give you the inside information.


Be pro-active in requesting a meeting

There is a fine line between being pushy and doing what it takes to get the job done. I would recommend contacting hospital staff a few times, then waiting a while if you do not get a response. Try again after a sufficient interval. Quite often things change in a short period of time.


Offer to work with the hospital to take small steps toward your goal

You could volunteer to give a series of talks to the staff or to provide demonstrations of your specialty. Get across the impression that you realize that this is a big step for them.

Caveats and Things to Look For When Learning to Manifest


 The following are some benefits of manifesting as well as a few hints and tips.

  1. This will happen very gradually.
  2. You will need to be persistent and patient.
  3. You will need to work hard to maintain your health by using healthy habits.
  4. You will need to be able and willing to multitask. This will involve doing your manifestation exercises at the very same time that you are in the midst of living that which you want to change. This could include difficult situations like meetings and even giving talks. However, it can be done as long as you are persistent.
  5. Your body will gradually become more relaxed.
  6. You will wonder how you ever stood to have all the old negative thoughts, ideas, patterns and actions.
  7. Your life will be happier and more fulfilling. This is guaranteed.
  8. Good things will start happening to you. At first it will just be a trickle so small that it is almost humorous to see how literally the Universe will interpret your desires.
  9. The good things will start to add up until you have something substantial.
  10. People will see you differently. You will be more sought after in both business and social situations.
  11. You will believe that anything is possible.
  12. Your life will pick up steam.

The Field

The Field by Lynne McTaggert (Harper, 2008) is a fascinating and thorough compendium of the various experiments which prove the existence of an energy matrix which determines what happens in our lives. There are descriptions of countless experiments which showed that the force and power of our thoughts really does determine what happens around us. Ms. McTaggart describes in great detail some of the resistance given to these ideas by traditional physics. However, there is just too much evidence on the side of quantum physics and the existence of a field of energy to deny this.

These experiments show that the outcome of a particular trial is dependent upon those who are observing it. Unfortunately, many people still do not accept this despite the overwhelming evidence.

In the introduction, Ms. McTaggart sums up the premise of the book as follows: “The Field tells a radically new scientific story. The latest chapter of the story, written by a group of largely unknown frontier scientific explorers, suggests that at our core we exist as a unity, a relationship – utterly interdependent, the parts affecting the whole at every moment”.

This has tremendous implications in this world of separation and duality. We tend to think in terms of winning and losing. We feel that if someone has received an advantage of some kind, that takes away from someone else. The truth of the matter is that there is an infinite amount to go around.

In my other occupation, I am a grant writer and consultant who travels throughout the country training people how to write successful grant applications. One of my relatives once asked me if that would not be harmful to my career in the sense that I am teaching others to compete with me. There are so many arguments against this premise but I will just name a few. This person was postulating that any help I gave to another individual was taking away from my financial security. We have a good relationship and so I was able to be frank with her. I explained that there is only so much work in the country in grant writing that it would take decades to make any measurable impact on my business, if ever. The other point was that giving these classes is instructional to me as well. I always receive information from my students. There is enough to go around and no matter how many people I train, I will always have enough.

I once listened to a tape of Gregg Braden discussing an experiment in which it was determined what level of competition would be necessary for optimum survival. Interestingly enough, the researchers came up with the result that zero competition is the best for everyone. Unfortunately, this view is accepted by only a very small minority of individuals. However, it is books like The Field which will help educate the public and hopefully help us reach a point where society is based more on cooperation than competition.
