How Meditation Can Change Your Brain Chemistry

Most experienced meditators would probably agree that a regular practice produces many positive, noticeable changes, such as a greater sense of well-being and happiness, greater feelings of relaxation, reduction in stress, and a generally more positive outlook on life. However, the reality is even more profound than we have thought until recently. There is an increasing body of evidence that meditation actually produces changes in our brain. This is a startling validation of meditation which can have a significant impact in convincing people to begin meditating and convincing occasional meditators to commit to a regular practice.

The implications are huge. This means that we can control the development of our brain through mental exercises and actually change its structure. For so long, we have been told by science that our brain development stops when we are in our teens or early twenties. The only change would be a deterioration as we age. However, we are now finding that mental functioning can be improved as we age through a concerted effort.

The 1/21/11 issue of the Harvard Gazette made reference to a study done at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2010. The article stated that “Meditation group participants reported spending an average of 27 minutes each day practicing mindfulness exercises, and their responses to a mindfulness questionnaire indicated significant improvements compared with pre-participation responses. The analysis of MR images, which focused on areas where meditation-associated differences were seen in earlier studies, found increased gray-matter density in the hippocampus, known to be important for learning and memory, and in structures associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection.

Participant-reported reductions in stress also were correlated with decreased gray-matter density in the amygdala, which is known to play an important role in anxiety and stress. None of these changes were seen in the control group, indicating that they had not resulted merely from the passage of time.”

A 2/21/11 article in the Huffpost Healthy Living by Deepak Chopra also noted that “Brain scans of Buddhist monks had already shown dramatic alteration of gamma waves in the prefrontal cortex, a region associated with higher cognitive responses as well as moral feelings like compassion.”

Activating the Zeal Chakra with Eudialyte

I am republishing this segment from the Crystal Newsletter of Adrienne Goff of Austin, Texas, thinking that it would be of interest. Adrienne is a recognized crystal expert and teacher.

Hello everyone! I hope you have been thriving during the powerful waves of September. I have been noticing something amazing in my healing sessions this month. While working on several clients, I have perceived a remarkable buzzing happening right at the base of the skull! The message I am getting is that the Zeal Chakra is beginning to awaken to a new level for many people right now. Exciting stuff! I had to do some more research to uncover what this vestigial energy center is all about, and here’s what I found:

The Zeal Chakra (also referred to as “The Mouth of God” or “The Well of Dreams”) is located at the back of the neck and the base of the skull, where there is an indention. It is an ancient chakra that has been dormant, but is now beginning to awaken. Its color ray is magenta. When it is fully activated, this center will regulate multi-dimensional telepathic communication. Awakening the Zeal Chakra assists the kundalini in rising, and you experience an increase in clairvoyance, clairaudience, astral travel, vivid dream-recall, healing abilities, empathy, and telepathy. It is also known as the ascension chakra, and I love that it is coming online for so many right now.  If you have been experiencing strange sensations in this area, or tension in your neck and shoulders, it might be a result of your Zeal Chakra beginning to awaken. I have been trying different stones to help this process along, and I found one that is really working wonders–Eudialyte!

Meditation Changes Everything

Most experienced meditators would probably agree that a regular practice produces many positive, noticeable changes, such as a greater sense of well-being and happiness, greater feelings of relaxation, reduction in stress, and a generally more positive outlook on life. However, the reality is even more profound than we have thought until recently. There is an increasing body of evidence that meditation actually produces changes in our brain.

The very idea behind meditation is to take us away from activity, both physically and mentally. In this place of non-thinking, we can access parts of ourselves which we can identify as our soul, our real essence, and our authentic being. We are so much more than we think we are. There is a space within us that is timeless and eternal, that lives on long after our physical bodies have ceased to exist. This is who we really are at our core. We are not our bodies, we are our spirit. It has been said that we are all spiritual beings having a human experience, rather than human beings having occasional spiritual experiences.

The benefits of meditation, which have been recorded both in studies and anecdotally by individuals, are as follows: less anxiety, the ability to sleep better, fewer illnesses, feelings of greater mental acuity, feeling of calm and peace, and greater confidence. Many students see at least two or three of these benefits. A high percentage of people express that they feel anxiety frequently, in some cases nearly all the time. The number of individuals with sleep problems is also high. A regular meditation practice can help these individuals. There is also the desire to connect with spiritual energy. Many of these people are yearning to experience something which encompasses more than just the physical body.

Peace in your inner world is reflected back to you as greater stability, success, happiness and accomplishment in your outer world. Having this peaceful frame of mind will enable you to present a calmer and more peaceful picture to the outside world. You can then expect to attract people and situations which will be more positive and lead to increased success in business, relationships, and the achievement of life goals.

Just on the other side of the divide and so close by are different, better ways to experience life. Try meditation. Your life really will change.

A Meditation and Exercise to Help You Work Directly with Universal Consciousness

The following meditation has been designed to help you create the feelings in your body that will allow the universe to reflect back to you your desires. It will assist you in getting in tune with the “consciousness computer” and using it to create the most joyous life you could ever imagine.

It will be important to eliminate all sources of distraction, and to pick a time and place which will be conducive to complete relaxation and openness to Universal Consciousness. This meditation may be done either lying down or sitting upright. If you are sitting upright, your hands should be held palms up on your knees. Think of a situation or outcome which you wish to produce. Say a brief prayer of gratitude for this experience. Call upon the Reiki guides and masters to assist you.

Take a few deep breaths in order to feel completely relaxed. Release any tension that you feel in any part of your body.

Spend a few moments clearing your mind of any random thoughts. Replace those thoughts with mental pictures of the universe as a loving, all-encompassing system to which you are totally connected.

Meditate on thoughts of peace and what that condition means to you. Think of clear mental pictures which show you exactly what peace in your life looks like.

Then, spend the next few minutes bringing the feeling of peace into your body. Concentrate now on what that feels like. Experience the quietness and serenity of pure and utter peace in your life. Surround yourself with the complete knowing that peace is the essence of what you are experiencing now and will always experience. Know that this is all there is.

Concentrate now on the feeling that you are peace, and that this is the true essence of your nature. Repeat to yourself, “I am peace” several times until you feel that this is undoubtedly so.

Now that you are peace, know that this is all that can happen. Concentrate on this idea for a few moments. Meditate with the idea of having the sure and certain knowledge that the universe will now reflect back to you utter peace in regard to the situation.

Let a wave of joy wash over you as you see the outcome. Feel deep happiness and gratitude. Create the feeling in your body that this is now a reality.

Sit in stillness for a few moments and then gradually bring your awareness back to the present, still feeling peace and gratitude.

The following exercise can be done quickly, either several times a day or just when you are feeling the need to connect to the universe to bring about your desires. It is important to have the setting for this exercise be a place where you feel utter peace and safety. For me, the corner of my backyard where my fish pond is situated is my ”safe place”. It is therefore possible for me to practice this exercise at home. However, if you are not at home, or if your “safe place” is an imaginary or distant site, such as a tropical island, this exercise will work just as well, as long as you can bring up the same feelings.

Take two or three deep breaths and then visualize yourself standing with your arms lifted up to heaven, with a beatific smile on your face. Feel the supreme happiness of knowing that what you want has already occurred. It is important to make this feeling as real as possible. Seeing a picture of yourself with this radiant smile will do a lot to create the feeling in your body which will attract your desires. Imagine a timeframe when you will actually see the results-it could be that evening, the next day, the next week, or the next month. However, it is important to set a specific time. Lastly, feel a deep sense of gratitude for what has already occurred. Visualize yourself actually saying these words of gratitude to the universe.

Do this exercise often, and you will soon see how quickly you are seeing your desires manifest.

What Universal Consciousness Can Do for You

The output in your life is determined solely by the input which you are giving to the universe. There are many benefits which can be derived from using Universal Consciousness for assistance with your Reiki practice.

By harnessing the power of this force, you will see a series of events reflecting your goals falling into place like clockwork. One has to be very clear regarding one’s goals, priorities and desires, for you will get exactly what you ask for.

Most importantly, the use of Universal Consciousness will draw the right clients and students into your life at the right time. This will enable you to utilize your Reiki energy to the best advantage to help the Earth and its inhabitants. It will also help you to attract other learning opportunities, bringing additional information and teachings into your life when needed.

In addition, knowing that one is in the flow of the universe is very empowering. This feeling of connection will help to vastly decrease the feelings of helplessness and restriction which is so common in the world today. The very concept that you are completely in charge of what happens in your life is a truly awesome one. This sense of personal power stuns when the full impact of it is realized. Of all the many concepts of the nature of the universe that have been posited throughout history, this is the one that most of us have wished with all our hearts is the “real” one.

There are many other benefits besides attracting new Reiki clients and students. These additional benefits act to improve the quality of your practice of Reiki. These include a feeling of greater confidence, a feeling of connectedness with the universe, a better sense of connection with others, a clearer focus with which to undertake goal setting and the establishment of priorities which are right for you, a greater feeling of peace and contentment, increased life satisfaction, and increased energy. These benefits all act in concert to enhance one’s Reiki practice.

In the section below, I will present the story of three Reiki practitioners who have used their connection to Universal Consciousness in order to be of greater service. I will also recommend additional reading as well as two techniques which can help you to feel the feeling that allows the universe to deliver what you asked for. Despite the fact that this has not been much discussed, it is an easy concept to understand. In essence, we must create a feeling in our bodies that a certain desire has already occurred. Once we have done this, it is necessary to feel gratitude to the universe for creating this.

It helps a great deal if one can keep in mind that Universal Consciousness is always there, whether a person believes in it or not, and that it can only reflect back what it is given as input.

Navigating the Transformative September Energies

This is a re-print from the September Crystal Newsletter published by Adrienne Goff of Austin, Texas, a recognized leader in the use of crystals for personal healing.

Multiple sources are all saying the same thing about September–hold on to your hats! An array of powerful energetic influences will sweep through this month, potentially changing the game for us on personal and planetary levels. There’s a lot of buzz around Wave X. According to Dr. Simon Atkins, Wave X is an influx of electromagnetic energy from the cosmos and the sun that is beginning to build now and will likely peak around September 28th. It has the potential to cause a “frequency shift” in consciousness, awakening new metaphysical gifts and triggering a rapid spiritual evolution process for many. People are predicting all sorts of things around Wave X: disclosure of information relating to extraterrestrials and the secret space program, Earth changes, an increase in the Schumann Resonance, and possibly some incidents of societal upheaval. We also have two eclipses in September, a partial solar eclipse on September 13th and a total lunar eclipse occurring during the peak of Wave X on September 28th. This lunar eclipse happens to be the fourth and final eclipse in a series of four total lunar eclipses called the lunar tetrad. Lunar tetrads are rare. There have only been seven since the birth of Christ, and each one has historically brought massive cleansing and change: the rise and fall of nations, stock market crashes, Earth changes, etc. To top it all off, the astrology of September is highly complex! According to Carl Bourdreau, mutable energy will be dominating the charts, as well as a significant amount of retrograde activity. This mix of influences highlights subtle nuances, brings things to the surface, and can loosen congealed patterns so that they can be reformed. Expect even-paced, progressive change and fluctuation. Overall, I am feeling very optimistic about all of these September energetic influences. It is ultimately leading humanity to a better place, even if the ride is a bit bumpy. The trick to maximizing this wave of change will be to stay connected to source, to our hearts, and to the Earth.
